Crimes can occur in any setting under any situation. While we tend to think of crime as activity involving violence or
theft, crime can have a number of faces. Laws have been put in place to regulate crime given its variability. An example of the variability of the law
and the crimes it attempts to regulate can be found in the laws prohibiting obstruction of justice. An individual that knowingly tries to conceal the circumstances of a criminal
event or that tries to keep those responsible for the event from being apprehended and punished can be charged with obstruction of justice. Just this month such charges were
filed in regard to the April 20, 2010, Deepwater Horizon disaster. This incident remains unprosecuted in regard to obstruction of justice on a state level in Louisiana.
As this case demonstrates, when considering the applicability of state law in a criminal case, one must also consider the applicability of federal
law. Many cases go unprosecuted on a state level that are prosecuted on a federal level. Obstruction of justice is regulated on a federal level under several federal
