post-surgical conditions, such as the necessity for venous catheter insertion. Failure to diagnose DVT can lead to innumerable complications, such as pulmonary embolism (PE), and increase mortality rates, therefore, it is a vital consideration in providing quality care. Symptoms associated with DVT include pain, edema, cyanosis, a sensation of tension and increased vein protuberance. DVT diagnosis involves an algorithm strategy that combines pre-test probability with elements such as D-Dimer testing and compression, as well as ultrasound imaging, which provides a convenient and safe method for investigation of DVT in lower extremities. In contemporary practice, the use of Doppler ultrasonography is the most significant diagnostic strategy being utilized in the diagnosis of DVT. While the gold standard of DVT diagnosis has been considered to be phlebography, many practitioners consider phlebography to have been replaced by compression ultrasonography (CUS) as the "imaging test of choice" (Burgazli, et al, 2011, p. 169). Guideline supporting one aspect of management A guideline issued by the American College of Physicians and the American Academy of Family Physicians indicates that low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) should be utilized whenever possible for the treatment of DVT, rather than use unfractionated heparin, as there is consistent empirical evidence that demonstrates the superiority of LMWH over other forms of intervention, particularly in regards to decreasing the risk for major bleeding during the course of the initial therapy (Snow, et al, 2007). Trials that involved the use of unfractionated heparin in the treatment pulmonary embolism reveal that many of these patients were either sub-therapeutic or supra=therapeutic while receiving this drug, while LMWH was immediately and consistently therapeutic (Snow, et al, 2007). Health promotion/disease prevention services Oral treatment with vitamin K. antagonists, such as warfarin, has proven to be a effective in regards to long-term prevention of DVT (Burgazli, et ...
