social networking technology, stories generated by the media get passed around faster than ever before, and as a result, it is now common for particular constructions of narrative to be
disseminated to massive segments of the population. This has the potential to be dangerous in situations where an early version of a media narrative is biased or misinformed, and it
is for this reason that all Americans need to have a strong understanding of argument and persuasion. The skills used in arguing and persuading can be used, first of all,
to critique and analyze the narrative presented by the media; one can determine what tactics the media is employing to persuade one to adopt their narrative. Secondly, one can engage
with ones understanding of argument and persuasion in order to judge whether these narratives are likely to be true, or whether they are merely manipulative. This paper will invoke the
example of a recent media narrative, the slaying of Trayvon Martin, to demonstrate the importance of understanding argument and persuasion. The killing of Trayvon Martin is an example of a
media narrative that has certainly caught on with the population and spread dramatically in just a short period of time; what began as an isolated incident in a rural town
in Florida has now become an international scandal. The reason for this is that the story is imminently repeatable; when one hears it, one has the desire to tell others
about the story. This is because the media narrative on Trayvon expertly invokes the argumentative tactic of kairos, which involves choosing the "right place" and "right time" for an argument.
