is in the center of the solar system. The teacher explains what the sun does for the earth. Following an introduction to the sun, the teacher identifies the planets
beginning with the ones closest to the sun. each planet is identified by name with a short description about that planet. For instance, Mercury is closest to the sun, which
makes it hot; it is very small. The teacher uses materials to give students an idea about its relative size using a basketball to represent the sun. Because thousands of
books identify Pluto as a planet, the teacher will need to address the issue, which will include a description of Planet. This is all declarative knowledge and it is the
appropriate type of knowledge when beginning a unit on the solar system. Declarative knowledge is involved with knowing something (NCLRC, 2004; Colorado Department of Education, 2002). There are basically
three types of declarative knowledge: labels and names, lists and facts and organized discourse. These are all factual. There are three cognitive activities involved in learning declarative knowledge. These are:
"linking with existing, organization, elaborating." In learning language, declarative knowledge would allow a student to describe a rule about the language being learned, such as a grammatical rule. This type
of knowledge would also allow the student to apply that rule in controlled practices (NCLRC, 2004). In the case of the planets, the only prior knowledge students would have
had would involve the sun. They know there is a sun and they know the sun is warm. Procedural knowledge is not involved with this lesson unit yet. Procedural
knowledge is knowing how to do something (NCLRC, 2004; Colorado Department of Education, 2002). This kind of knowledge would allow a language student to apply the rule they learned in
