et al. (2002) report that there are at least 40 risk assessment scales, and they identify the three most commonly used. The Waterlow and Norton scales are most commonly
used in the United Kingdom; the Braden and Norton scales frequently are recommended in North America. The three scales - Norton, Braden and Waterlow - "can be viewed as
a standard of reference and are recommended in several practice guidelines" (Schoonhoven et al, 2002). The authors flatly state that none of the
three scales satisfactorily predicts development of pressure ulcers. Because these three are the most commonly recommended among three developed countries, certainly the authors understand the implications of their conclusions.
Prevention is an admirable goal, but the researchers conclude that there is less benefit in prevention activities than has been believed for some time.
There is evidence that Schoonhoven et al. (2002) do not make their pronouncements lightly. They state that the "Braden scale was more useful between 48 and 72
hours after admission" (Schoonhoven et al, 2002), and that only the Waterlow scale considers surgery though surgery is a risk factor for pressure ulcers. The authors state that other
studies have reported more satisfactory results for the Norton and Braden scales, but that the researchers nonetheless "have confidence in our results" (Schoonhoven et al, 2002). Decision Making
Within the Stetler model, the evaluator is faced with four choices: use the findings; consider using the findings; delay using the findings; or reject
the findings. Use the Findings There appears to be no reason not to use the researchers findings. The study is comprehensive and
