cognitive and social constructivist, and questions if the last two are truly effective tools to use in this process. Social Experimental Approach to Decision Making / Study of Behavior The most notorious experiment in this area was done by Stanley Milgram and although its extreme, its useful as an example because its easy to understand. Milgram devised an experiment in which subjects were told that they would be administering electric shocks to "learners" within the same facility who were having trouble learning (McGhee, p. 124). There were no shocks actually given to the learners, but the subjects believed there were. If any subject decided they didnt want to go on, the experimenters cajoled them and prodded them to get them to continue. What was most disturbing was that in spite of the warnings on the equipment and the sounds of pain coming from next door, "... all subjects were prepared to deliver a significant number of apparently painful electric shocks before refusing. In fact, 65 percent of subjects were prepared to continue right to the very end, administering the highest possible levels of shock..." (McGhee, p. 124). The decision under consideration here is whether or not to shock the "learner"; that is, when and how to physically hurt another human being. The objective of the experiment was to try and determine under what circumstances people can be made to do things that fundamentally go against who they are. The disturbing thing is that all the experimenters were willing to go along with the experiment; Milgram saw a distinct parallel between this behavior and that of the guards at the Nazi death camps. But this study is problematic because of the ethical issues involved in carrying it out. The ...
