Define the problem. 2. Isolate the key factors in the situation. 3. Identify the limits of the situation. 4. Identify the goal to be achieved. 5. List all possible solutions that will address the problem and achieve the goal. 6. Evaluate each alternative to determine which one best meets the requirements of the situation. * Measure the benefits, costs and risks of each. * Identify the likely intended and unintended consequences of each. 7. Identify the one course of action that is most likely to produce the desired consequences within the constraints of the situation. 8. Make a commitment to the choice and implement it (Guy, 1990, pp. 25-44). The issue at hand entails rescinding a policy that has heretofore allowed employees to take advances upon their paychecks, in effect giving them money before it is earned. While it may be surmised that a certain number of people would respect this exceptional arrangement without abusing it, another sector - as is true in this particular situation - does not value such leniency and thereby takes advantage. Applying Guys (1990) decision-making model to these circumstances finds the student has addressed all eight points of the paradigm. She has effectively defined the problem as the abuse of a limited favor bestowed upon employees who need money prior to the actual pay period.
