yet (Kirkpatrick 84). Yet, this possibility looms on the horizon and concerns many people, including American policymakers. In January of 2003, President George W. Bush announced his intention to urge
congress to ban all experimentation having to do with human cloning (Bush 2). Subsequently, such legislation was considered on the floor of the House, with opponents claiming that lawmakers had
not taken the time to understand the complexity of this issue (Rosenberg 10). An examination of this debate demonstrates that while the technology may be complex, the issue is straightforward,
and can be summed in one simple question: is human cloning morally justifiable. The gut reaction of the ordinary person is also simple -- an unequivocal "no." Examining this issue
also shows the gut reaction, in this case, is absolutely right. The human cloning debate began when scientists successfully cloned a sheep, which they dubbed "Dolly." The genetic inheritance
of Dolly was identical to that of another sheep. The nucleus of an adult cell was extracted and placed within an egg, from which the nucleus had been removed (Man
and superman 23). This "persuaded" the egg to consider itself fertilized, the reproduction commenced in the usual fashion, producing a replica of the donor sheep. As this illustrates, the
real-life scenario does not produce a fully-grown replica, as one so often sees in the movies, but rather suggests that a human baby who is the genetic replica of a
fully grown adult could one day be created. There are multiple dimensions to this debate. For instance, when scientists propose using embryonic stem cells in cloning research, it brings
up the issue of when life starts and what constitutes a human being. Also, there are cloning experiments that are not designed to create a whole human being, but rather
