There are certainly other issues to consider such as their academic careers and the lure of easy money through sports, at too young an age. As with anything pertaining to sports, the debate is heated and each side makes some good points. II. College Athletes Should Be Paid The side of the argument that suggests that college athletes should be paid has been getting more and more attention. Former Arizona State offensive lineman Kyle Murphy said they are admittedly amateurs but it is quite frustrating to see all the revenue generated but the students not sharing in it (Cohn C20). What is most troubling is that although he himself was on a scholarship, the money which covered housing was cut off when the semester ended and so the rent money had to come from other sources anyway (C20). Two arguments emanate from Murphys comments. One is that colleges do get a great deal of money from their athletes. Further, colleges have been known to cheat, or engage in unfair practices, in order to get the best players. They might even accept a fair student over someone who is more academically qualified. Many student athletes unfortunately do not have the grades to attend some of these schools. The obvious reason for this phenomenon is that money is involved. The colleges do make money from these talented recruits. Why shouldnt the players share in the success? Blackistone argues that scholarship athletes should be allowed to have jobs in order to earn money for movies, pizza and clothing store just like every other classmate (Blackistone 1B).
