on Americas level of responsibility for and toward poverty in other parts of the world. The readings discussed here support two sides of the issue. Buchanan and Wattenberg
These authors discuss the effects of immigration on American culture. Buchanans (2002) position is that continuous, uncontrolled immigration undermines traditional American culture, while
Wattenberg (2002) maintains that immigration helps to diminish the problems brought on by lower birth rates and contributes to supporting Americas traditional power base.
Buchanans (2002) primary point is that the America to which immigrants flock today is not the same as that of the late 19th century when millions emigrated from Western
Europe to create the notion of the "melting pot" that was American culture. Those immigrants learned the language and they assimilated into American culture while retaining some of their
traditional cultures. Todays liberalism makes it politically incorrect to insist that immigrants assimilate into established American culture, with the result that the "melting pot" descends into the creation of
a dichotomy of cultures where language and cultural barriers are defended and preserved, rather than overcome. Wattenbergs (2002) arguments are much weaker, and
are based more on the liberal position that America should be welcome all comers. The growing disparity of language in border states is not an issue for Wattenberg (2002)
because many immigrants are from non-Spanish speaking countries. Benefits of immigrant labor outweigh the detriments of non-assimilating culture. Eglitis Eglitis (year) promotes
the same, tired and one-sided arguments used repeatedly to portray the individual American consumer as a hate-mongering, unfeeling slave driver, burying points that, if valid, are truly reason for outrage.
