This paper takes the form of a Lincoln-Douglas debate on the question. Discussion The format of a Lincoln-Douglas debate is as follows (though there are probably different variations): the debate,
which is one-on-one, starts with a "statement of purpose/policy," and the person who agrees with the statement then begins the debate (Hopkins, 2005). This person has six minutes to make
his case, after which the person who represents the dissenting opinion cross-examines him for three minutes (Hopkins, 2005). Then the negative person has seven minutes to present his position, after
which the affirmative person has three minutes to cross-examine him (Hopkins, 2005). Then the first (affirmative) person has four minutes for rebuttal, after which the negative position offers his first
rebuttal (Hopkins, 2005). Finally, the affirmative person has three minutes to offer a second rebuttal (Hopkins, 2005). That finishes the debate. (Obviously this paper is not long enough to explain
nearly 30 minutes of debate; it will only cover the main ideas.) Statement in favor of universal service: All U.S. citizens, both men and women, should serve in the military
because it has many benefits that work to the good of our society. First, it provides young people with a "period of reflection before determining their lifes work"; second, it
"instills discipline"; third, it provides training that will be of significant help to those who decide not to go on to college; fourth, it provides young people with an opportunity
to travel the world, something they could probably not afford on their own; fifth, "it reduces unemployment"; sixth, it means the services will have enough troops; i.e., it will solve
the manpower shortage; and finally, and perhaps most importantly, if everyone serves, the charge that African-Americans and other minorities are overrepresented in the services, and particularly the idea that they
