the prejudicial realities that exist in society. Her article "Death of the Profane" is an examination of her experience and her experience with the article and editing. The following paper
summarizes her article. Death of the Profane Williams begins her essay by discussing buzzers and the seeming necessity of buzzers in cities where people are frightened of what
could take place. She notes that while many people have argued they are actually discriminatory devices, they are also devices that may well save peoples lives and are thus accepted
and allowed. She then notes that one day she was in the city, looking at a sweater in a window of a
store, Bennetons, and thought it would make a great present for her mother. She mentions it was two weeks before Christmas and so she was shopping. She peered into the
window and pressed the buzzer so the store associate knew she was there and wanted to come in and buy the sweater. "A narrow-eyed white teenager wearing running shoes and
feasting on bubble gum glared out, evaluating me for signs of that would pit me against the limits of his social understanding. After about five seconds, he mouthed Were closed,
and blew pink rubber at me" (Williams, 1991; 45). She found herself incredibly outraged and wishing she could make him see, and
wished she could even take back desiring to ship in the store. There were customers in there, white customers, and it was one in the afternoon and so the store
was not closed. He would not let her in because she was black. She decided she would write an essay of her
