It has been argued by psychologists and sociologists that fathers offer an individual their sense of place, or a sense of understanding, in a social world, whereas a mothers duty
is to nurture and provide support. When a father figure, the symbolic nature of instruction in terms of dealing with the world, is gone, the individual must seek that father
figure, or seek their identity through the missing father figure, always influenced by the absence of that father. In the following paper we examine some different works as they involve
this particular theme. The works discussed are "Death of a Salesman," "My Antonia," "The Invisible Man," "Hamlet," "The Odyssey," and "Huckleberry Finn." Death of a Salesman Willy Loman
is the primary character in "The Death of a Salesman." He is also a man, a father, who is essentially absent, symbolically at first, from the lives of his sons.
He is constantly working and assuming that he is an incredible success. For years he has been traveling much of the time, selling to various regions. As such he has
not been there for his two sons. In this respect both of the sons have had to grow up without their father, or with essentially an image of their father.
