wife, or simply a mean person. But, Chopin managed to write a story where, by the end of the story, the reader can truly understand and relate to her newfound
sense of freedom and identity without her husband. But, then, suddenly, she dies upon finding out he was not actually dead after all. The following paper examines the significance and
the necessity of Mrs. Mallards death in the story. Death in Chopins Story of an Hour When discussing the importance, significance, and necessity of her death the reader
should first perhaps ask what was gained by her death? The entire short story delves into the nature and the character and the thoughts and dreams of one woman, Mrs.
Mallard and the reader comes to like her. So, what purpose is served in her death? In order to understand this the student must understand why she died. It
was noted in the beginning that she had a heart condition which indicates that she was a woman who was used to being fairly calm, fairly sedate, and not allowing
her emotions to get the better of her. But, then again, if one looks back in history, at the time this story was written, that heart condition was likely diagnosed
by a male doctor and male doctors often deemed women ill from "spells" when they were honestly frustrated and lost without identity away from marriage and family. They were not
