One of the most effective and enjoyable methods of interpreting a piece of literature is to look at the symbols and imagery employed by a work, attempt to discern patterns in the use of those symbols by the author, and determine what effect if any the symbols have upon the primary theme of a given piece of literature. This paper will use the imagery of death that runs rampant throughout William Faulkners "A Rose for Emily" to demonstrate how such imagery and symbols might be subjected to fruitful analysis in order to drive a superior understanding of a piece of literature. This paragraph helps the student explore Faulkners use of death-related imagery throughout the story. From the very beginning, Faulkners "A Rose for Emily" is a story seated in the symbology of death; it concerns the affairs of an old and dying woman, her traditional posturing against modern conventions such as paying taxes, and ultimately the extent to which she, as an unchanging artifact of her own times, is overpowered by death despite struggling against it at all points of the story. This trend can be discerned by tracing the use of the imagery throughout the story. The use of death-related imagery in "A Rose for Emily" follows a specific pattern in which the characters in the story, particularly Emily, attempt to cover up the reality of death, only to have it return in unexpected ways.
