This paper takes the form of a letter to Dr. King in which the writer uses standard rhetorical devices to tell Dr. King that the cause of civil rights has
advanced to some degree since his day, but there is still a very long way to go. Discussion In constructing a formal rhetorical document, the student will want to use
pathos, logos and ethos, which are, respectively, the "appeal to emotion," the "appeal to reason," and finally, the appeal based upon the outstanding character of the speaker or writer (Burton).
The student will use rhetoric in his letter but also note those points in Dr. Kings letter where he used it. Because the paper is in the form of a
letter, the student will write in first person, and might write something like this: Dear Dr. King: Im writing to tell you whats happened since 1963. A lot of
it has been negative, but there has been a truly amazing development that makes a lot of us proud, and should make you happy as well: the United States has
elected its first African-American President! His name is Barack Obama and hes a Senator from Illinois. Hes 47, a young man, and a man of vision. Hes intelligent, principled, ethical,
and because he is black and was raised by a single mother, he knows what its like to struggle and fight for everything. Some people are nervous, but there are
always those who see problems in every situation; but I think its fair to say that most Americans are excited and proud of having taken this step. We believe he
doesnt intend to be a "black President" or the "President of Black America," but President of the United States of America; we think hes going to be very fine. You
