For example, we may find that some people can overlook the pain or even use it as a challenge which can enable them to see life from a more positive perspective. Or we can see people who become mean and irrational on a constant basis, turning their lives into negative experiences. Every individual deals with pain in a different way and it seems that no matter how one may try, their approach to pain cannot be changed. Bearing this in mind we look at two people who suffer, or suffered, pain and examine how they represent the diversity of mans ability to cope. In this particular examination we discuss "Tuesdays with Morrie" by Mitch Albom and an essay sent by the student requesting this paper which discusses one individuals sociological perspective of suffering from chronic pain. Pain and Suffering The first thing that should be perhaps understood about the texts that will be discussed is that they are very different stories. One, the story told by a man who suffers chronic back pain, is a story of constant pain and not one that tells the story of a man facing his impending death that lies just a short time away. In the story of Morrie we are faced with a man who knows that he will die. In these respects the pain experienced in the two stories is quite different to begin with for Morrie knows that the pain will end with death and will likely end soon. The author of the chronic back pain experiences knows that his pain will likely go on for years. With this in mind it comes as no surprise that the two men may look at their pain in very different ways. But, ...
