way that they cannot be powerful contributors to our society. Their only disability is the fact they cannot hear. They can think, rationalize, and dreams like all other people. Their
disability does not impair their ability to get around and not their ability to think, laugh, learn, and love. It seems because people know this, know that they are not
disabled in any way that would hinder their participation in the world they have been forced, in many cases, to learn how to communication in a hearing world. This has
inadvertently pushed many deaf children to a position where they are helpless without the ability to communicate. In the book "Deaf Like Me" by Thomas S. Spradley and James P.
Spradley we are presented with such a story. This story, written by the father and uncle of a deaf girl, delves into the life of a deaf girl as her
parents try to raise her in an oral world, hoping she will somehow miraculously be able to function and hear, and then realize that the best way to teach her
and allow her to grow is through American Sign Language. Their story is an example of how often deaf children are pushed into a world they cannot relate to and
