insist that deaf children learn to communicate in a hearing world. This has inadvertently pushed many deaf children to a position where they are helpless without the ability to communicate.
In the book "Deaf Like Me" by Thomas S. Spradley and James P. Spradley we are presented with such a story. This story, written by the father and uncle of
a deaf girl, delves into the life of a deaf girl as her parents try to raise her in an oral world, hoping she will somehow miraculously be able to
function and hear, and then realize that the best way to teach her and allow her to grow is through American Sign Language. The following paper reviews aspects of this
particular work titled "Deaf Like Me" by Thomas S. Spradley and James P. Spradley. The edition used in this essay was published by Random House in 1978. Deaf Like
Me As mentioned, this particular book is a book about a deaf girl. The parents of this child were fearful from the beginning as the mother was frightened of Rubella.
They discovered that their daughter was deaf and they immediately began trying to get her to communicate in an oral world. After several years of work they found that
by the age of 5 she was only able to say a few words, words that only their parents could understand and decipher. The parents had essentially caved in to
the pressure of society, and professionals, that the best way to teach their daughter to communicate was to somehow expect her to magically "hear" and communicate in an oral world.
