introduction to the work, Rosen says that the book is heavy going for a modern reader, in part because the mathematical proofs Copernicus used in the 16th century are foreign
to todays audience; this is obvious by looking at Book VI, part of which is included (Rosen, 2008). But the foreword by Andreas Osiander, and the preface by Copernicus himself,
in the form of a letter to the Pope, are the materials used in this analysis. There are certain themes woven throughout the introductory passages that tell a lot. First,
Osiander suggests several times that Copernicus should not be ostracized for his work and then goes on to explain what the scientific method is. He notes that there have already
been a lot of rumors concerning the contents of the book, and that it does indeed break new ground, proving as it does that the "earth moves whereas the sun
is at rest" (Osiander, 2008). He believes that these findings will offend a number of other scholars, but he begs them to consider the duty of an astronomer, which is
to observe the motion of celestial bodies and then devise explanations for these motions (Osiander, 2008). Since he wont be able to determine what truly causes the motions, he will
have to "adopt whatever suppositions enable the motions to be computed correctly from the principles of geometry for the future as well as for the past" (Osiander, 2008). That is,
