putting the plethora of myths and legends that surround the memory of Rasputin, not only to rest, but also within the context of their times so that the man and
the myth may be more fully understood. In fact, De Jonge takes the stance that the role play by Rasputin in Russian history "has little to do with facts," but
rather derives from the hearsay and innuendo that surrounded him (30). As this suggests, De Jonges principal thesis is that it is out of the "accumulation of legend and rumor,
none of which can be believed without question," but which, nevertheless, cannot be completely discounted, that the "real, the historical Rasputin," gradually emerges (30). In supporting this argument,
De Jonge draws comparisons between the Rasputin legend and the manner in which society regards the life of a saint. He states that the "life of Rasputin resembles the life
of a saint, in the sense that hagiography is a stylized form of narrative that only touches on those aspects of the saints life that pertain to saintliness," regarding
everything else as "irrelevant" (30). After establishing Rasputin within the context of his Siberian background and early life, which includes references to the extraordinary powers with which he was credited,
De Jonge places particular emphasis on his spiritual transformation in early adulthood, pointing out that such transformations, such as Saul on the road to Damascus, are the "very stuff
of hagiography" (40). From this point, De Jonge goes on to methodically chart the influences in Rasputins life and his rise from obscurity to being a powerful influence at
the Tsars court. Throughout his narrative, De Jonge carefully differentiates between what possibly occurred and the substance of legend and myth, showing how these features were generated. In so doing,
