Genesis with science.1 This model for creationism became popular in the nineteenth century, as it accommodates ideas from both science and religion by suggesting that the six days indicated in
Genesis are metaphorical in meaning rather than actual 24-hour long periods.2 Those people who profess belief in both science and the poetry of Genesis, point to the fundamental similarities between
scientific accounts of creation and the Book of Genesis. Both accounts picture the universe has having a definitive beginning and they both picture the earth as being initially "desolate and
devoid of life.3" Furthermore, each of these accounts pictures the earths surface as being "blanketed in darkness," "covered by water," and finally being illuminated by light.4 In the Genesis account,
the Hebrew word "yom" (meaning "day") frequently appears.5 The word "yom" is used in Hebrew scripture to represent various periods of time, with its meaning being determined by the context
of the sentence.6 While its most frequent meaning is to refer to a 24-hour day, the meaning of this word is not restricted to precisely 24 hours, as in some
passages, it refers only to the portion of a day when the world is illuminated in daylight and in others, it refers to a time period that spans multiple years.7
While this fact does not indicate that the author of Genesis intentionally used the word "yom" to indicate the passage of billions of years, it does point out the flexibility
of this concept within ancient Hebrew culture. Furthermore, as has been pointed out by proponents of this theory, the author of Genesis "lived thousands of years" ago, which makes
