Angola is in some ways a very new nation, but the people who have lived there decade after decade are certainly a strong people in their own right. Aside from the political turmoil that had witnessed a large civil war, and much discord, Angola has come out of it as the twenty-first century unfolds. Of course, Angola during the 1960s and 1970s was far different politically, but the people remain the same. To an extent, the people who reside there have not changed much over time as they are entrenched in their long roots. The people of Angola are certainly worthy of investigation and that is just what Basil Davidson did several decades ago. In 1972, a work called In The Eye of the Storm was published. This is a book that focuses on the people of Angola in all their glory and in all their disharmony. The theme of the book does in fact go to the political problems that Angola has endured over the years, but an important thematic element is the will of the people. It is important to differentiate between themes. Of course, fighting and guerrilla warfare are par for the course in Angolas history. Other important themes are colonization and dominance. In this case, Portugal would dominate Angola for centuries. By the time the early 1970s would roll around, and when this book was published, there would be a lot of difficulty. Portugal would see armed villages in Angola. The thematic inclusion related to the will of the people is important.
