defeating a mighty warrior has inspired people with hope when they are faced with a seemingly insurmountable problem that cannot possibly be overcome. Examination of this passage further illuminates how
and why this narrative continues to be a source of hope in the modern world. An invading army threatens Israel and their champion, Goliath, is a giant, nine feet
tall and an accomplished warrior. Each day, Goliath shouts to the rank of Israels army a challenge to send their champion to do battle with him in order to decide
the dominion of one nation over the other. Obviously, the alternative is all-out war, but no man among the Israelites has the courage and skill needed to defeat the mighty
Philistine. The story of David and Goliath introduces the lad who would later become Israels great king as he visits his older brothers on the front lines. David s the
"good shepherd" who is "not afraid to face lions and bears" (Bosworth, 2006, p. 191). In other words, Davids prowess with the sling and the strength, skill and courage to
confront a formidable enemy did not simply come from nowhere, as he has saved his sheep from predators. However, what is significant is the way in which David relates
his victories against large predators to his faith in God. Scholarship points out that many features of this narrative relate to the culture and practices of the ancient Near
East, such as the decapitation of a mortal enemy as "evidence of his death and vanquishment," as David decapitates Goliath after winning their battle (Lemos, 2006, p. 225). Another feature
that is evident and significant from a theological perspective is the fact that David frequently calls upon the Lord, upon the "living God," indicating with certainty that it is not
