two people hit it off to the extent that they pledge to live their lives together (Green 1). Ives plays are known for the way in which this playwright manipulates
the language, as well as for his rather bizarre stage inventions. For example, in "Sure Thing," whenever the two people who meeting in a caf?, Bill and Betty, hit an
impasse in their conversation, a bell rings and the action of the scene is reset, giving the characters to get around a verbal faux pas (Green 2). Another aspect of
the play is that Ives manipulation of language is reshuffled to maximize effect, a line that sounded sweet is frequently reinterpreted and on the second time around (Eck C4). In
other words, a line that was funny on the first go-around may become tragic on the second replay (Eck C4). The point of the bell device is that, in
Ives play, "time can be rewound to erase mistakes," and, in so doing, the characters edit their personalities, as well as their language, in order to facilitate the goal of
achieving romance (Lyons 58). As this indicates, "Sure Thing" basically presents an interesting way of dramatizing and underscoring those awkward first exchanges that hold the possibility of leading to
rapport between two people (Gaines F4). However, within the course of the play, Ives also makes a scathing reference to the blaze, casual attitude of many men toward establishing intimate
relations with a woman. In one of the many replays of the dialogue, Bill indicates that his overture to conversation with Betty stemmed from just a desire to get "acquainted"
(Ives 16). Betty then goes into the longest speech in the play in which she speculates that Bill is making small talk as a prelude to an invitations to
