Cleanthess view; Philos view; standardizes one of their arguments; determines what kind of argument it is, and evaluates it. Standardized Argument The first thing was to find out what a "standardized argument" is, and the best reference available was a brief mention on a "blog," where a contributor said that the "standardized argument formula" was represented by the acronym TREES, which stands for "Topic, Restatement of Topic, Example, Example, Summary" (Steven, 2005). Assuming this is a good model, it should be possible to apply it to Humes writing about natural religion. Hume argues that any doctrine which is both obvious and important needs to be handled carefully; he also writes that obscure and uncertain points also need careful treatment-in this case, "dialogue and conversation" (Banach, 2006). Reasonable men, he says, may differ about these issues, but there is one subject that "unites the two greatest and purest pleasures of human life, study and society" - natural religion (Banach, 2006). Thus, the study of natural religion should be pleasant, and can be approached from different viewpoints (Banach, 2006). The Dialogues takes the form of a conversation in which a narrator tells the reader about Cleanthes, Philo and Demea, and their various views on the existence of God. Cleanthes appears to be a philosopher, Philo a skeptic and Demea a theologian. Well see if this is correct and analyze one of the arguments.
