disbelief. Humes brand of skepticism maintained that all knowledge was a product of experiences. Therefore, if something cannot hold up to the verifiable scrutiny of everyday experiences, it
cannot be regarded as knowledge. It was natural for Hume to consider the concept of God and evaluate whether true knowledge about God is possible, based upon his criteria
of skepticism. He contended that human beings did not automatically believe in God because God placed the idea into their heads through some sort of divine experience. On
the contrary, according to Hume, society had conditioned them to believe in the existence in God to a point that they no longer questioned His existence, just merely accepted it
as an undisputed fact. Literature, according to Hume, further reinforced the idea of God, which further influenced public perception. The Greek epic poets like Homer infused the gods
and goddesses with human qualities because by constructing a human perception of the Creator with whom everyone could immediately relate, the existence in God could be simply an example of
a self-fulfilling prophecy. Hume concentrated his philosophical inquiry into the so-called knowledge of God in his treatise, The Natural History of Religion. He asserted that evidence that God exists
in a singular or plural context because it has become universally accepted as truth (135). But does this constitute as knowledge? Hume observed that polytheism, and later monotheism
was merely the result of ignorance, "but fell into error" (135). He wrote, If men were at first led into the belief of one Supreme Being... they could never
