the development of the expectations of the family have developed and emerged. In this way, Herlihy sheds new light on this very practical matter and provides a wealth of
interesting insights into what is perhaps the most fundamental building block of society. Herlihy easily establishes himself as an authority on this topic
from the beginning (Nicholas, 1986). The sources that he consults in order to accomplish his goal of tracing the lineage of the family unit are both scholarly and impressive.
He examines that work of such notable philosophers and thinkers as Aristotle, Tacitus, Aquinas and Augustine. Additionally, Herlihy has consulted a variety of other significant sources such as
monastic archives, sermons, the lives of saints, and even civil archives as a means of constructing a well-rounded view of the family and its evolution throughout history. Interestingly, Herlihy
refers to the codes and scripture of the church as a means of establishing the standards that served to form the ideals by which families functioned.
To get at such broad and fundamental topics, Herlihy has had to exploit such several types of sources. To argue that the ancients
