modernity and postmodernity have been to the overall existence of society. Each author, while drawing from his own opinions and perceptions, references the historical works of Karl Marx, who is
considered to be one of the worlds foremost postulators on modernity. Marxist theories were directed to the nature of society; his view of a perfect society was one that
embraced democracy. Through Harvey and Berman, the reader readily understands how Marx held on fast to his vision of what society meant in the overall scheme of modernity.
Indeed, Marx recognized the effects of individualistic tendencies within society and the fact that people are far too concerned with their own well being to provide for those less fortunate.
While he understood the motivation behind such behavior, he did not condone its existence, saying that society could not be defined as a scientific expression. In his opinion,
