is the early 1950s, recent memories of World War II and the internment that the Japanese-descended residents of the island endured during the war are an integral part of the
narrative. The time period, as well as the setting, forces the characters in this novel to be very conscious of each other and the societal divisions that exist during this
period. The drama that unfolds in this book incorporates and summarizes these societal divisions The narrative centers around a trial. The corpse of Carl Heine, a stocky salmon fisherman
has been found in the water. Suspicion for the murder immediately falls on Heines childhood friend and recent adversary, Kabuo Miyomoto, a Japanese-descended resident of the island who has recently
been negotiating with Heine for the sale of some of his property. Prior to the war, Kabuos father initiated a deal with Carl
Heine, Sr., the father of the murdered man, to buy seven acres of the strawberry plot that he farmed. Kabuos father was one payment away from owning the land when
the government forcibly interred all Americans of Japanese descent in camps for the duration of the war. Carl Sr. died and his widow returned the money that Kabuos father had
already paid and sold the land to a third party. Nevertheless, Kabuo still wanted to purchase the land that he felt was morally and ethically already his. When Kabuo learned
that Carl was about to regain his familys farm, he visited Carl Jr. the day before the murder and attempted to renegotiate the purchase of the seven acres.
