more information on using this paper properly! Abstract Patton-Fuller Community Hospital provides an excellent instructive example of the use of Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) technology within the structure of
a complex organization. Because the hospital is a non-profit institution, it provides the ability to look at systems interconnection purely from a data transmission perspective, rather than adding the additional
complication of a profit motive. This paper is thus structured into four parts. The internal and external structures of data transmission are examined, followed by a look at how these
structures fit into the conceptual framework of the OSI model, on a layer by layer basis. Finally, a look at existing protocols as well as a recommendation for the successful
implementation of further protocols is provided. Introduction Today, we live in what many refer to as the "Information Age". This name comes from the vast importance of communication technology in
all spheres of society, from education to business, and even the management of complex social institutions such as militaries and hospitals. It is easy to take for granted the efficiency
with which such institutions tend to operate, especially when it comes to hospitals - the ability to quickly see and treat patients is entirely dependent upon a thorough foundation of
systems interconnection technologies. Without such a structure in place, there would be no established protocol for the efficient transmission of data from one structural component of the hospital to another,
and service would suffer as a result. To understand this more clearly, it can be instructive to look at a specific example, such as Patton-Fuller Community Hospital. Patton-Fuller Community Hospital
