Essay / Research Paper Abstract
Data compression is becoming increasingly important as companies seek to maximize their use of bandwidth. The 5 page paper compares the different data compression techniques of two companies; Peribit and Expand. The paper looks at how they work, the cost of the solutions offer and the support that is provided. The bibliography cites 5 sources.

companies. One solution has been to provide ever increasing band widths. However, as any resourced based approach to managing band width will indicate, it can be more cost effective and
of greater efficiency to manage the bandwidth. The idea of data compression is not new, but looking at the way it is achieved in the provision of WANs there are
various options. Comparing two companies will demonstrate this. The use of compression increases efficiency as it is able to increase the level of information tat is carried by a
set bandwidth. Peribit, a forward looking company, make use of molecular sequence reduction (MSR) algorithms (Adshead, 2003, Peribit, 2003). This compression is able to provide a compression ratio of 1.2:1
for video and voice transmissions and 5:1 for the SQL traffic (Adshead, 2003). The key to this compression is the elimination is the ability to reduce the repetitive traffic.
Peribit estimate that between 70 and 90 percent of all data transmitted over wide area networks is repetitive, freeing this up releases a great deal of bandwidth (Peribit, 2003). Performance
can be increased reliability at amounts up to ten times the previous network capacity (Peribit, 2003). The MSR technology is based on the same research that was used to
map the human genome (Adshead, 2003). In the task of seeking to identify the human genome software played an important role in finding similarities in the various DNA sequences and
as such strings of data and sequences had to be examined. For the network the data may be different, but the principle remains the same. By seeking out the different
sequences the identical sequences of data can be identified and the repetition eliminated form the transmission. MSR can find different repetitions of
