from the Ministry of Health as well as results taken from study a selection of twenty projects or programs across the country. These all had the aim of increasing the
standard of healthcare and reducing maternal mortality and morbidity (Hounton et al, 2005). However the resources and provisions of each of the programs varied, none were exactly the same,
just as many of the projects were being supported and finances by different sources, such as non government organization (NGOs) and all appeared to be lacking in some way (Hounton
et al, 2005). A range of data points and variables were collected in the research all of which have an impact on
the level of maternal mortality. To examine the way the research has been conducted and the use of the variables we can look at the different types of variables that
are used. There are many different potential influences; these the variables need to be defined and assessed as independent or dependant variables.
An independent variable may also be called the predictor variable, this is the variable that is thought to be responsible for any changes, the variable that is changing, and which
the research is seeking to explain is known as the dependant variable (Dancey and Reid, 2002). The outcome is the variable outcome, in
this case it is the maternal mortality rate, the rate of mothers that die as a result of pregnancy or birth related issues. The independent variables are the influences that
