actual data. Gangs take their violence with them when they are incarcerated and gangs will try to fight each other in prison. Chan (2009) reported that gangs account for 18
percent of inmates in Washington States prison system but they are responsible for 43 percent of the violence. Prisons in the state of Washington now separate the Nortenos and Surenos
gangs and house them in separate wings. They also have them in different holding units when they arrive. These gangs have an order to fight on sight of any opposing
gang member. The separation resulted to 200 fewer incidents of violence over the next year (Chan, 2009). Chan obtained some of his data from Chad Lewis, Washington Department of Corrections.
James (2009) reported a comprehensive history of prison riots, including the numbers of inmates and guards who were killed and injured. The most recent riot he reported in a
California prison where shards of glass and metal scraps were used as weapons. The siege lasted for 11 hours. The riot left one dormitory being burned to the ground and
250 people injured (James, 2009). Racial tensions between Hispanic and Black inmates were identified as the cause (James, 2009). The California Department of Corrections had reduced this type
of violence more than two decades ago by separating these two races but a Supreme Court ruling mandated they end the separation. One prison official argued that this resulted in
