public. People continue to challenge its validity by asserting that the theory of evolution is "only a theory." This is what occurred in the Cobb County School District in Georgia,
which sought permission to place stickers on high school biology textbooks that read "Evolution is a theory, not a fact, regarding the origins of living things" (Sullivan and Smith, 2005,
p. 43). The problem is that the public and scientists are using two different definitions of the word "theory." In the popular
lexicon a "theory" refers to an "unsubstantiated guess or assumption," such as when there is speculation that unidentified lights in the night sky are either ghosts or alien spaceships (Sullivan
and Smith, 2005, p. 45). However, when scientists refer to a "theory," they are referring to a "logical, tested, well-supported explanation for great variety of facts" (Sullivan and Smith, 2005,
p. 45). While it is true that the theory of evolution has not been verified through laboratory experimentation, neither have theories that are widely accepted in geology or cosmology.
A cosmologist cannot actually witness a star collapsing and forming a black hole, but this does not mean that this theory is simply an unsubstantiated guess, as it explains a
wide variety of facts better than any other theory. It is also true that some scientific theories are better at providing an explanation for the facts concerning a scientific question
than others, and this is true of Darwins theory. Biologist Theodosius Dobzhansky once commented, "Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution" (Sullivan and Smith, 2005, p.
45). The following examination of Darwins Theory of Evolution examines the facts and history of this concept, discussing how Darwin arrived at his conclusions, the information that preceded him
