there are many different levels and elements involved. The individual will go through various stages as they reach a higher level of spirituality. In St. John of the Cross Dark
Night of the Soul and St. Teresa of Avilas Interior Castle the reader is presented with stages and the process of spirituality in relationship with God. They both offer different
works but there are also elements that appear to be quite similar. One of the most powerful elements involved with transcendence and
enlightenment involves an understanding and the existence of darkness, which seems coupled with pain and suffering. Darkness and suffering, for the most part, seems associated with not knowing God, but
it also involves the journey to knowing God as well. With that in mind the following paper examines each separately, and then compares and contrasts the two as they involve
what St. John of the Cross refers to as "dark night of the spirit." Dark Night of the Soul In the
beginning of one section of this particular focus St. John notes that "THIS dark night is an inflowing of God into the soul, which purges it from its ignorances and
imperfections, habitual natural and spiritual, and which is called by contemplatives infused contemplation, or mystical theology" (St. John of the Cross II v). In essence, it seems as though there
is a sense of cleansing the soul from the negative and useless realities associated with living and being a human being. As
a human being the individual is faced with many material, or secular, realities that often get in the way of a higher pursuit, of a nurturing of the soul. It
