statement of surprise as well as a statement of objection, and as history unfolded, it proved to be only the first of many surprises and objections that were to surround
the political career of James Knox Polk. James K. Polk was the favored protege of President Andrew Jackson, and this close alliance
had given him the nickname of "Young Hickory" as well as a notable amount of political power in Washington and a position as Speaker of the House of Representatives2.
A Democratic nomination placing James K. Polk in the polls as a candidate for the office of the U.S. Vice President would have garnered little surprise in the political arena
in 1844, for this was a move that the opposing party had already considered and were prepared to counter. When party division and indecision placed the Democrats in deadlock
and placed their "dark horse" nomination in the polls for the office of presidency, however, it caused much surprise both in Washington and across the face of the nation3.
An even greater surprise followed the first when the dark horse won the race for the Democratic Party and became the eleventh president of the United States. Despite the
fact that James K. Polk is considered by many to be one of the most successful and effective leaders to have ever served as President of the United States, many
