regards to their knowledge of love. Chaereas and Callirhoe were both raised in an urban environment. They know of love and also of the possibility of duplicity by a loved one. Daphnis and Chloe, on the other hand, are complete innocents, totally befuddled by what has occurred to them. However, their love is undoubtedly on firmer ground that that of Chaereas and Callirhoe because they were friends before they fell in love. Therefore, it is likely that their relationship, as it grows and develops, will be based on more than a purely physical attraction. As this suggests, these two tales provide contrasting pictures of love. Chaereas and Callirhoe, like Daphnis and Chloe, are attracted to each other by their extreme physical beauty. They fall in love, quite literally, at first sight, having never seen each other prior to spotting each other in the street. This contrasts sharply with the experience of Daphnis and Chloe who appear to have grown up together and who were accustomed to watching their respective flocks in each other company. Page 4 of the fax that accompanied this assignment reads that "They did everything together...You would have been more likely to see the sheep and goats separated from each other than Chloe and Daphnis." Their attraction for each other occurs only when each of them is confronted by new circumstances -- Chloe by the sight of Daphnis bathing and Daphnis by the unexpected electricity in Chloes kiss.
