Hell. Within this work is a section entitled Inferno, which is a poem about the journey through life and death and more specifically, Hell. This poem talks much
of the way this poet surmised Hell to be and talks of the differences between Heaven and Hell. Dante definitely did believe in a separate Heaven and a
separate Hell. According to the views of Dante, Hell was a fire blazing, tortuous place which was both very real and very much to be avoided if at all
possible. Furthermore, Dante believed in various levels of Hell indicating that different people went to different levels dependent upon their offenses. Dantes beliefs in this regard indeed
mimicked the beliefs of many religious people of the time. The Christian leaders relied heavily on this tortuous interpretation for both power and a means of influencing behavior.
Dante was among those to internalize this message and indeed reflect it back through his works. Those reading Dantes vision of Hell would certainly be compelled to follow religious
doctrine if, for nothing else, to escape such a fate. In the Inferno, Dante describes a bit of Hell: And he will hunt that beast through every
city until he thrusts her back again to Hell, From which she was first sent above by envy. Therefore I think and judge it best for you To follow
me, and I shall guide you, taking You from this place through an eternal place, Where you shall hear the howls of desperation And see the ancient spirits
in their pain, As each of them laments his second death; And you shall see those souls that are content Within the fire, for they hope to reach
