told that Satin is the quintessential representation of evil. In this text he is represented as a slithering serpent hissing his treachery to Eve. But, in Dantes Inferno we see
a slightly different Lucifer. In the following paper we examine the character of Lucifer in Dantes Inferno as seen in Canto 34. Canto 34 and Lucifer One of the
most obvious conditions in Dantes Inferno, as it relates to Lucifer, is that which involves his tempting of people. In Dantes Inferno we see no instance where Dante is threatened
or tempted. Satan is not trying to win Dante to his side. Satan is merely the creature that he is, doing his job of dealing with the evil people of
the world. In essence, Dantes journey has been one wherein if he did not take the correct path he would have found himself in the mouth of Satan along with
other sinners. But, it appears that Satan has no evil intentions towards him, although Dante surely feels that his spirit is threatened in the mere vision of Lucifer. We watch
as Dante and his guide see Lucifer and observe his appearance. The threat in this appearance involves the horrific picture presented, a picture that does not threaten or tempt, but
merely a picture of a creature that is the embodiment of power and evil. And, as such it is not anything that Satan does, in terms of being aimed at
Dante, that he fears. It is the vision he describes which frightens him, along with his knowledge of the evil Lucifer. Dante tells us "How frozen and how faint
