a clever mix of Christian values and pagan characters, as Dante uses both of these to address morality. While the dichotomy may seem strange, in truth these two oppositional
features compliment the theme of the story, and each serves an essential purpose. In this way then, the blend of both Christian and pagan attributes supports the message of
the Inferno. A perfect example of this mix is evident in Dantes depiction of Hell, which is decidedly a Christian
value but comes replete in Dantes version with a host of mythological and ancient literary creatures. Some examples include Centaurs and Ulysses - from the ancient Greek mythology.
Included in Hell are locations from mythology as well, as is evidenced with the inclusion of the rivers Acheron and Styx.
The premise of Hell of course, is as a punishment for sin, and this is a universal Christian belief. Dante furthermore goes into quite extensive detail in terms
of how God punishes sin, and reveals punishments which are in accordance with the sin which was committed. In this way then, the punishment fits the crime, and this
is in line with Christian ideology. In Dantes interpretation of events, Hell is reserved for the pagans, again a tribute
to Christian ideology. And yet, the vision which Dante presents is entirely his own. While providing punishment for those condemned to the circles of Hell, Dantes details of
