a rational theology that presented Christian principles as being aligned with Aristotelian thought (Matthews and Platt 233). In so doing, Aquinas had to come to terms with the philosophy proposed
by Augustine, which states that human reason is helpless because it cannot operate apart from the will, which was lost due to the consequences of original sin (Matthews and Platt
233). In response, Aquinas argued that the will is free and reason, while suffering detriment from sin, is still able to discern much concerning the world (Matthew and Platt 233).
Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) was a medieval writer and poet whose literary contributions were so immense that the world changed as a result (Matthews and Platt 235). In his epic
poem The Divine Comedy, he balances the secular with the sacred, the ancient with the new, in a manner that sought to reconcile the literature of the ancient word, the
Iliad, the Odyssey and the Aeneid with medieval scholasticism. In so doing, he created an incredible complex allegory that tells the reader a great deal concerning medieval religious observance and
