Danny is returning to his senior year at Rydell High School in Chicago. Sandys plans change and she is completing her senior year at Rydell, also but she doesnt know
Rydell is Dannys school. She also does not know that Danny is part of the T-Birds gang. On her first day, a member of the Pink Ladies befriends Sandy who
tells the group about her summer romance with this very nice boy. At the same time, Danny is telling the T-Birds about the romance but he lets his friends
believe the Sandy was a conquest. Danny is part of a sub-culture, the tough guy working class greasers, from which the movie takes its name. The greasers was a
subculture that originated among white street gangs in the Eastern part of the U.S. (Wikipedia, Greaser, 2006). It was a type of teenage rebellion that involved attitude and fashion style
(Wikipedia, Greaser, 2006). The kids wore leather jackets, denim jeans and t-shirts and they drove hot rods or motorcycles (Wikipedia, Greaser, 2006). Kids wore their hair combed back using some
sort of oil, i.e., it was greased back (Wikipedia, Greaser, 2006). The Pink Ladies are also greasers. The point of the gang is to fulfill a need for belonging,
for constant friendship and status both in the group and in the school. The group gives each member protection from being alone and from being the target of teasing and
disrespect from other students. Its like the Three Musketeers, each member sticks up for the other members. Although the class issue was not emphasized in the film, Sandy and
