Nine of her works effectively reflect this association to ones inner struggle and ultimate breakthrough: Daddy, The Gift, Five Days In Paris, Silent Honor, The Ranch, Special Delivery, The Long Road Home, Mirror Image and Bittersweet. In The Long Road Home, Gabriella Harrison is a rather young victim in that she is only six years old. Born into privilege, the lap of luxury is not enough to sustain the horrid treatment she receives from both her mother and father. Gabbys rich kid image comes to represent nothing more than a ploy, inasmuch as she "looked startled much of the time, like an angel who had fallen to earth, and had not known what to expect here" (Steel PG). It is clear that Gabbys childhood is the core of all her inner power struggles, which in turn represent her desperate desire to break free of all tradition in her life. Her mother, a very controlling and unyielding woman, suppresses her from early on by showing her only the dominating side of relationships, as though that was indicative of all relationships. Victoria and Olivia Henderson of Mirror Image present much the same aspect of family struggle, in that they hobnob with social elite while at the same time tend to their ailing father who appears to hold them back from achieving their personal pursuits. Based within a nautical Titanic atmosphere, Steels Mirror Image presents the reader with a challenge to distinguish between the two identical sisters as one represents evil and the other goodness. "She was her partner, her confidante, her friend, her cohort in all mischief ... the other side of her life, her heart ... the other side ...
