which informs and educates. More specifically to the paper presented herein, many novels from the past provide us with intricate and informative accounts of gender issues and sexuality. This is
clearly the case with many novels written by Daniel Defoe, "Roxana" being only one of several stories which provide accounts of women and the society which controlled them sexually and
otherwise. In the following paper we present an examination of "Roxana" and illustrate how it is an important work in terms of providing us with valuable information that assists in
the scholarly study of sexuality in the early modern world and the scholarly dilemmas that have surrounded the story. "Roxana" Roxana, in many ways, is nothing more than a
story that depicts male power and male superiority in such a way that it illustrates women as virtuous victims of such mentality. It is the story of the decline and
defeat of one woman who is tempted by the glamour of immortality. She is recounting her tale, and "From her vantage point in the narrative present, Roxana combines an anamnesis-a
remembering-and a warning: she recounts the events of her life as an argument to her reader, urging that the reader not do as Roxana herself has done," presenting us with
a story that is informing the reader about realities as they concern many conditions, sexuality as well (Snow, 1994; p. 523). We see Roxana as a woman who has involved
herself in many things, living an incredibly varied life for a woman of the time. She has lived through abandoning her children, adultery, adultery and many other conditions, which would
make a woman of the time a very despicable creature, to say the least. And, the character of Roxana further illustrates the power and control inherent in the male gender,
