This being the case, it becomes evident that in order to fully understand a great work of literature, it is necessary to see it within its cultural and historical context. Therefore, the following overview of Daniel Defoes Robinson Crusoe (1719) discusses not only the themes of this classic work of literature, but as how it reflects the historical context of Defoes lifetime. Historical Period Daniel Defoe was born in 1660 in London, which makes him a product of the seventeenth century. However, he did not begin his writing career as a novelist until he was 59, which was in 1719. The literature of the first half of the eighteenth century was notable for its wit and intelligence, concerned with civilization and with humanitys place in it. Contemporary writers with Defoe were such literary luminaries as Jonathan Swift and Alexander Pope. However, as far as influence on Defoes writing, many experts on Defoe look to the disasters that Defoe witnessed as his greatest influences. Defoe witnessed a recurrence of the plague, the Great Fire of London in 1666, and the worst storm to batter England in recorded history in late November through early December, 1703 (De Wire 34). One DeFoe scholar speculates that these events may have shaped DeFoes fascination with catastrophes and survival. Certainly, it seems likely that Defoe had the great storm of 1703 in mind when writing Robinson Crusoe (De Wire 34).
