all about ratings, and in the end, money is the bottom line. Therefore, radio hosts continue to try and dream up new and inventive ways to draw an audience
- one that sticks. Often, the result has been the proliferation of pranks, since they provide such shock value, which in turn keeps people tuned in to that particular
station. However, radio station pranks can and do cause a lot of harm as well, as evidenced by a plethora
of examples. Clearly this crosses an ethical line but in many instances, it crosses a legal one as well. In many of these instances, the FCC gets involved
and often will issue punishments to the radio station for having participated in the prank in the first place. The question then becomes, is such a punishment worth it?
Has the prank paid off enough in terms of ratings to warrant such a prank? Many radio stations have expressed their definitive "yes" by continuing such pranks, despite
heat from the FCC. This issue is indeed controversial, and essentially is a matter of ethics. Is a radio
prank acceptable even if it harms others, or is morally wrong, or is illegal? What standards should the radio stations follow? Are they bound only by legalities or
do they have a moral obligation as well? These are all important questions and considerations in todays world where information reaches larger and larger audiences, and therefore he consequences
