famous poetess whose work focused on her culture and their struggles, wrote a poem titled "We Real Cool" which is a poem about "seven pool-playing gang members at a bar
called The Golden Shovel" (Riverdeep Interactive Learning Limited, 2000). In this poem she presents the reader with very simple, and straight forward, images of some of the problems that exist
in an urban environment, problems that speak of dangerous teenage behavior. The following paper examines this poem and the realities it speaks of. We Real Cool and Dangerous
Teenage Behavior In Brooks poem she presents the reader with the most powerful of poems, presented in the most simplistic manner. One author notes that, "None of her poems
was tougher-or terser-than "We Real Cool" (Riverdeep Interactive Learning Limited, 2000). The lines of the poem are as follows: "we real cool./ we left school./ we lurk late./ we
strike straight./ we sing sin./ we thin gin./ we jazz june./ we die soon" (Brooks 1-8). It was a poem that Brooks wrote when she saw some young men playing
pool one day. She thought about their lives and how they felt and realized they were victims of a society and also young me who decided to rebel against that
society, eventually dying in their rebellion. This is the basis for angry and harmful behavior in youth it seems. In a reading of the poem, one student, an art student
