time, literature has proven a valuable resource in understanding the ways men and women relate to one another. The evolution of literature into film brings the characterizations and setting
into life and into a place where the audience is more likely to comprehend and relate to the issues being presented. This is certainly true of the movie, Dangerous
Liaisons (1988) which is an adaptation of the novel, Les Liaisons dangereuses, by Choderlos de Laclos (1782). The plot is interwoven among a number of relationships but is
centered on the malicious plans of the Marquise de Merteuil (Glenn Close) and the Vicomte de Valmont (John Malkovich). Stuck in the confines of strict social obligations, the two
war with boredom through intrigue based on petty revenge and jealous retribution for others happiness. The deceitful schemes and machinations of the couple are set in place as entertainment.
The main object of their malice is Cecile (Uma Thurman), the virginal daughter of Madame de Volanges (Swoosie Kurtz). A second victim, Madame de Tourvel (Michelle Pfeiffer), is
drawn into their plots through the wanting of Valmont. He plans to conquer her while he and the Marquise plan to ruin the young Cecile through an attack on
her moral virtue and the sanctioning of social conformists.. The story is set in France during the 1770s, a time often associated with the need for strict moral
adherence to the social norm. The relationships between men and women can be complex, sweet, hateful, real and fantasized. The processes of love are multi-dimensional and often hidden
