the return of the sisters long-lost brother Jack, and what it symbolizes. Discussion The five Mundy sisters, their brother Jack, the illegitimate boy Michael and his father Gerry are the
main characters, and the play is told through Michaels eyes, as he looks back from adulthood into two days in 1936 that changed everyones life. The play is highly symbolic
and there are many threads to explore: the dancing as a metaphor for freedom; the role of Gerry as a "trickster"; the village as a microcosm of society; and the
impact of the return of the sisters brother Jack. The play is very rich in meaning, but we have to choose one, so well look at the impact the
return of Jack has on the sisters. First of all, Jack is a priest, coming home after 25 years service in Africa. We are never told specifically what happened,
only that his service has come to an extremely quick end. He arrives by bus, weaving a bit, apparently the worse for liquor (Dancing at Lughnasa). Then, he drops his
shabby valise, which falls open, so that a bunch of African artifacts fall out, along with a feathered helmet (Dancing at Lughnasa). Later that day, at home, Jack discovers that
Michael is illegitimate, a revelation that he accepts cheerfully-a very strange thing for a Catholic priest to do (Dancing at Lughnasa). He does something else shocking: he asks his sister
Kate to dance; a blasphemous thing for a priest to do (Dancing at Lughnasa). He also tells the women that in Africa, "many women have love children ... and they
belong to and are loved by the entire tribe" (Dancing at Lughnasa). This is clearly a reference to the way Michael is being loved and cared for by his mother
